why, hello there world

Woot! First post!

So... how is everyone?

I find myself not entirely sure what to leave as a first digital blog footprint...

So, naturally, I Googled 'first blog post'.

Unfortunately I didn't encounter anything particularly inspiring/anything preventing me from completely blanking when I turned back to the steady constant blinking cursor on the white screen. So, as I often do in times of wanton inspirational need, I turned to a wondrous little place on the big wide web called "xkcd: a webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language" (http://xkcd.com) and stumbled across this:

I love content too ;)

Hopefully there will be more of it in the next post. Particularly about Web 2.0 training.

Until then, happy blogging everyone!

  1. Saw this today via today's Library Link of the Day - http://www.tk421.net/librarylink/-

Words to Avoid (or Use with Care) Because They Are Loaded or Confusing - "Content"

'If you want to describe a feeling of comfort and satisfaction, by all means say you are “content,” but using the word as a noun to describe written and other works of authorship adopts an attitude you might rather avoid. It regards these works as a commodity whose purpose is to fill a box and make money. In effect, it disparages the works themselves.'

Not sure I agree - I use "content" in that sense a lot.

  2. Not sure I agree either haha :S In my mind it is a word with two clear distinct meanings, though I suppose the above comic could be seen as a play on words.

My little mini Oxford dictionary details two meanings for the word 'content': one is as described above, meaning satisfaction(pronounced 'kon-TENT' where capitals indicates emphasis) and the second is that 'content(s)' are what something contains (and pronounced 'KON-tent')and which is apparently from the Latin 'contenta' meaning 'things contained'. Seems pretty unambiguous to me!

I clicked away at the links above and saw that the page is part of an essay collection by Richard Stallman, at this site: http://shop.fsf.org/product/free-software-free-society/

Further clicking led me to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Stallman and what seems to be his own site:

... An interesting story and man!
